Barclays want to charge 1.8% for accepting payment from a Business Debit Card

The small company that I work for have just move to Barclays from Avalon for accepting card payments. On getting our first statement for charges after the 2 month charge free period for luring us in we find that they are charging 1.8% for accepting payment from business debit cards. With Avalon debit cards were charged at a fix rate of something like 15p per transaction regardless of the type of debit card. On taking a payment over the phone there is no way of telling as far as we can see whether it is a personal debit card or a business debit card. We have been hit with charges of £800+ instead of the normal £30. Can anyone tell me if the fees Barclays are charges are warranted and should there be a difference in accepting different types of debit cards or are Barclays being a little naughty. We have looked through the terms and we can not see mention of these variations in charges. Can anyone let me know if they are having the same issues or advise on what action to take.
Thanks

What do the terms/tariff the company agreed to say?

The problem with business debit cards is they are often deferred debit cards, so effectively charge cards and these are usually charged at the credit card rate.

It should be possible to identify debit cards from any other type of card by the card number. It's how the bank know what to charge the company; ask your bank for further details.
