overpayment, 8.5k to return HELP

Ok my miss's who deals with the money has been a bit stupid, we have had our renewals over the past year and she's been lazy sending it all back,
We did update in June, and then had a letter to say we'd been over payed since the years before and we owed £1700 we kind of expected this, we then got a letter saying either send us all new records of child care etc or they'll go by what they have on record, seems as we had updates we thought they had it all,
They have now asked for £8800 yes that much, and have totally taken out all the childcare we pay, they've told us we need to provide receipts for all childcare, we've got them from the nusery and after school clubs ready to hand back,
How long does this take and is the review likely to make this figure come down, I sure hope so as we're about to move and need every penny for our first house etc.
Once we send back the receipts for child care what happens?

To clarify I know we owe some money but that 8.8 thousand has no childcare costs involved, its down to us earning to much, so do they review what we where entitled to and the child care costs then re calculate the amount?0
