Hi I have just had my Admiral multicar premium increased by 16% for a single SP30 fixed penalty, is that a normal sort of increase for SP30? it seem high to me. I though a lot of insurers ignored a single SP30?

Purely from experience of work mates, friends and family £30 seems about average for the first SP30 however a second can add over another £100.
Remember part of that increase could be an admin charge.0 -
Got sp30 fixed fine and licence endorsement, but no increase of insurance, thankfully, insured with Liverpool Victoria This was last year.0

16% for a single SP30 is par for the course. Once it is a couple of years old it will have only a tiny effect on your premium, even though they'll ask about it for the next five years.
Don't get multiple SP30s: that's expensive0 -
There's no simple answer - it depends on the insurer and your own circumstances. If you're in a high risk group (eg young drivers) you may find it makes more difference than it does if you're middle aged, middle class and generally boring. If you're with a budget insurer like Admiral who cut their margins to the bone you may find it makes more difference than it does with a higher end insurer which is less desperate to be at the top of the GoCompare table and can afford to absorb the cost of the slightly increased risk you represent. 16% doesn't sound outrageous though.
It's true that in the past many insurers ignored a single SP30 and some still do, but it's gradually changing.Part of the reason is that they can no longer assess risk based on sex, so they have to put more emphasis on the things they can still use to assess risk. Another part is speed awareness courses. Once upon a time a single SP30 probably meant you'd been caught once, slightly over the limit. Now with most people taking SACs for a first offence it probably means you've been caught twice, or that you've been caught once quite a long way over the limit.0 -
Thanks all for your input. Looks as though I will have to accept the increase as quote still seems competitive.
I am definitely in the middle aged/middle class and very boring category ;-)0 -
if it's still competitive then why grumble?
and, as previously mentioned insurers are using non sex data even more now, so will put emphasis on something like this. SAC is also a good point...
what i've found is someone like admiral are cheaper for the 'clean' risks, as they perform better, but once you have had points or a claim your not as safe as you used to be...
bear in mind - you were caught speeding, i.e. going over the limit... which means you are not the same as a 'safe' driver who is squeaky clean.0
