Copy a cd to memory stick ?

Hi Guys. I bought Paul McKennas Hypnotic Gastric Band book and cd. However I would like to copy the cd to a memory stick so that I can listen to it on my netbook but for some reason I cannot copy it/send to documents or anything. When I put the disc in my laptop it just begins to play straight away and I don't find the way to do it. Any advice please ?.

It's most likely recorded as an audio CD rather than a data CD, so you'd need to "rip" it, rather than copy it in the way you're thinking.

Ripping usually gives the option of several output file types e.g. mp3, wav etc. Be aware that wav files will be huge! Other formats will be smaller but are not "lossless" meaning they discard some of the original audio information (usually the bits humans can't hear much anyway).

I think even Windows Media Player can rip CDs - take a look and see. If you plug your memory stick in first, you'll probably be able to rip straight to the stick.

Not necessarily - FLAC files, for example, will be smaller than wave files, yet are still lossless.

Is it a data disc or an audio CD?

Windows Media Player can "rip" audio CD's, producing compressed audio files, such as MP3's.

If it's a data disc, then pressing the Shift key while you insert the disc disables auto-play. Make sure you hold the key down for long enough. The PC has to go through the whole cycle of examining the disc to see what's on it before it's safe to release the key.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • Either way I can't do it. I must be doing something wrong. I insert the disc, click on rip cd etc, then get message windows media player cannot find the file. I'm not really computer savvy, never heard of the term 'Rip' before. Thanks.

What machine are you using? Brand name and model number?

First of all, what happens when you pop the CD into the machine? Which program opens in order to play it?
If WMP, then go to More Options and choose the 'Rip Music' tab. The Default may be set to Windows Media Audio. Change that to MP3.

Maybe a silly question, but did you stop the CD playing before trying to rip it?

I would stop it playing, close whichever application was playing it, then try ripping.

Download Freerip and open it up, load your cd and it will find it automatically to rip to the default folder,(you can change the folder to "my music" if you want), then send the ripped audio to your mp3 or netbook.
