  • Yes, they can afford it without any benefits, but a little help would make things a bit easier for them.

the benefits calculators do not really work for students

they are classed as a couple so it will be the LHA for one-bedroom accommodation that will be used in calculations
Your daughter can make a claim but her income and much of his student funding (including loans even if he does not take them) will be used as the household income so there may be very little, if any, help

There's also quite a chunk that's disregarded for student income: books, travel; but I think some of this is local authority dependent and varies.
Also note that his student income will be counted for 40-odd weeks as of the start of September, regardless of when he actually starts and finishes his course, and regardless of when the money actually comes in.

  • I really appreciate all of the replies, thanks for your time and help.
  • DD in the same situation as yours except not in London, shes at uni and BF apprentice.

Sorry but no to Housing benefit but 25% reduction in council tax for person attending uni not apprentice..
Attending uni you can claim JSA and HB (if meets the criteria) between undergrade and postgrade courses also her bf should recieve loan for tuition and maintenance and depending on his own circumstances a none repayable maintenance grant which is higher in London I believe.

DD manages well no debt, very MSE, lives in expensive area recieved no maintainance grant however she has always worked PT which makes all the difference.

So sorry not much extra help for them unless they are disabled or have dependents.
Always worth asking the University student finance office if any extra bursery, scholership or sponsership available.
