Help with wrong info on payslip and tax credits please!

This is hard to explain but I'll do my best! Last October I was under paid around £1700, obviously I informed my employer immediately and I was paid the owed amount the following day. I received an amended payslip with the correct amount and deductions on.

In November my payslip showed "owed hours" and they added the £1700 again to my payments, however deducted the amount I'd paid in tax ect the previous month.

I notified my employer of this as it was adding another £1700 to my total taxable pay for the year. Still with me as this is where people have lost it??

I tried several times to get them to correct it to no avail, asked to speak to payroll and wasn't given the details. The office forwarded me on an email from them saying it was correct. However it still had £1700 that I hadn't earned in my total taxable pay.

Fast forward, the company is closing down, I have left and I have received a tax credits overpayment notice, about £700-750 of which is solely down to this extra £1700.

Previous employers have finally agreed its wrong but aren't willing to do anything about it.

So this is where I ask for help please!!

Is there anything I can do to make them go back and change 5 months of payslip and a P60 or do I just have to pay the £700-750 back as tax credits will only accept what my P60 states.

Are they legally obliged to rectify the error?

I've looked online but I'm struggling to find an answer to these questions, which could be the stress of it all getting to me!

Any tips would be very much appreciated
