The First Time Buyer - How do they have it really?

    Most would be first time buyer couple I know have 2 x £40 a month iphone contracts, 2 fancy cars on tick and an expectation of several foreign weekends away each year plus a main holiday. When we saved for a deposit back in the olden days (early 80's) we didn't waste any money on none essentials, lived with mum and dad till the wedding and went camping in Cumbria for our honeymoon.

    Why 40 years ago house price to earnings not much different to now. Deposit required same percentage, amount compared to earnings you could borrow lower, interest rates higher.

    House prices to average earnings 1973 5x now 5.2x so may be you could explain above.
