Webcam/messenger help please

Hi
Have bought a webcam (Microsoft LifeCam VX-1000). Trying to set up to see family in USA. Using Yahoo Messenger (latest version). We can see them but we get message saying webcam not connected, even though we can see ourselves.
From looking at different forums for help think the problem is probably something to do with firewall or router settings but have not idea how to change these.
Any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Router is Linksys and use AOL.
