Car air con
From the outset I know very little, no make that nothing about my car ac. You can call it naive if you wish but my strengths lie in other places hence why I take my car to a garage to be fixed.
The air con on my car has died and I'm unsure of where to take it and what is a reasonable charge. We have the normal ats, halfords and kwik fit plus two independent garages near me who list air con recharge.
It seems that the recharge and bacterial thingy ranges from £55 + , I can live with this but what if something is wrong with it? Do I have to get it repairs or will they just leave it in current state. I can live without the air con if need be.
Car is a '57
Any thoughts?

Kwik Fit won't charge you if they can't recharge the system and will probably tell you which bits need replacing if needed. A/C recharge is probably the only thing KF can do with out cocking up as it is an automated process.
I like the '57- it's a fine car well built and very desirable, will become a collectors item and appreciate in value. Good buy.0 -
Stay well away from the big chains, and go for one of the local independents. You don't get anything for nothing in this world, and the independent garage are more likely to actually know what they are doing.0

Yep. Local garages compete on quality of service and will be better placed to comment on the overall system that kwik fit. The kwik fit will just be someone who's been trained to use their expensive machine.0

with air con you need to use it all year....or the seals dry out so a recharge will be useless
even in winter leave it turned on lowest setting and adjust temp0 -
If it suddenly died, you have a leak somewhere because a component has failed, a pipe, or most likely the condenser radiator at the front.
If it has gradually got less cold over a long time then finally given up, a recharge will likely fix it.
If it isn't working at all, best to take it to an air con specialist for diagnosis and repair.
BTW: what on earth is a '57? Not a '57 Chevy surely? That will definitely need a specialist as it uses a different type of gas.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

F1 Autocentres do a recharge for just over £40.
They have automatic machines which do all the necessary leak testing and filling.
I have had two cars done their recently and they don't charge if there is a leak and they can't recharge.
If there is a problem then shop around for the best price to fix it. A local independent quotes £350 to supply and fit a new condenser to my Renault when if cost be £70 and 1/2 an hour to do it my self!0 -

Do check with your '57 dealer - my local Ford garage(as I've got a Ford) has a recharge for £49 (the fact that they have a Halfords service centre opposite has nothing to do with that of course)0 -
