credit and student accounts

i am posting this for a friend on another forum
i will copy and paste her post to here so that i dont get anything wrong

Hi guys, I once tried to get a certain bank card at RBS but it refused me. I'm 18, have no catalogues, no credit cards, no outstanding debt.

Will I have a problem getting a student overdraft do you think? I have applied for catalogues before but got refused credit and then my mum decided to tell me everytime u get refused your credit rating drops

Is there anyway I can ease my mind without ringing the bank (i hate telephones)
So far I think I'm going to bank with either RBS or Halifax, probably more towards halifax because even though I liked the look of RBS, i have been with halifax longer so i should have a bit more value as a customer (hopefully lol)

I don't know anything about credit and stuff so if someone can help in anyway, please let me know.

I am currently on my final year degree and during my first year degree i just apply for Halifax Student Account without a problem with 1,500 pounds student overdraft which is 0% interest. I also then applied for NatWest Student account to get 5 years railcard without problem.

What they expect from me was:
Halifax: Go to the branch and speak to one of the advisors and provide them your passport and student card. Yup i previously have a basic cashcard account with them before.


NatWest: Apply Student Account online (I'm not sure if this still can be apply thru online) with your UCAS reference and then sign the contract and pictures(for railcard)

PS: i am an international student and studying foundation year in the UK for 7 months before i go to university with no credit card, outstanding debt and whatever. But i do have a basic account (solocard) since i was 17 that time when i am studying foundation course.

Based on my experience, if she is holding UK passport then she should be able to get at least basic 500 pounds student overdraft as long as she doesn't have any debt.

Most banks are tripping over themselves to give students interest free overdrafts. Today's students will be providing tomorrow's profits.
