Can you have the same car insured twice?

Is it illegal to have the same car insured twice by 2 different people,

i.e. can i be insured for the car with company X & my wife be insured for the same car with company Y?

If illegal will this quickly flag on the insurers computers?

you can only hold insurance for a vehicle by 1 policy with 1 company, but yoiu can add a second person to a policy, which would be cheaper anyway.
the police also now have access to insurance details etc.

Hello there! Car was already insured by myself but i am an infrequent user of it, wife needs it as a commuting to work cover on it making her the main driver.

I couldn't do the above for her on my policy without cancelling it and starting a new one with her the main driver, this would have meant a heafty cancellation fee plus they were not the cheapest for my wife.

Thought it wouldn't be illegal since i just trying to make sure we've both got cover, only made the policy a few hours ago to start a mid-night, should i call up first thing and cancel, or have i probably been flagged already and lost the insurance ive paid for?:(

call the insurance and ask see what they say, but as long as your main driver you could add your wife and she does not need to be named as main driver.

Why come on here asking if you can do it after you have already set up a second policy.

She does need to be main driver otherwise the company she works for won't pay the car allowance, and also because she will be.

Insurers did not also me to add her as the main driver on my policy.

If i were to call the insurers and tell them it was insured elsewhere, and if it is infact illegal, then i promoting them to put me down as fraud, keep the £600 odd quid ive paid, and cancel the policy. Not sure they would pity the ignorance.

So does she need to be the policy holder? Or does she need to be declared as the main user of the vehicle to qualify for the mileage?

You can be a named driver but have the main user of the vehicle down as being not the policy holder!

So get that clarified! Otherwise she would need a new policy with herself being the holder and main user with you being named driver.

Most companies are more concerned about the fact you have business use on for the one using it for business before they will reimburse mileage.

so dont call the insurance company and if its illegal both insurances are now void, you get caught on an ANPR camera, get pulled over by police for no insurance, end up with points and fine and the car seized and crushed.

you would have been better calling an insurance company up and just asking them if it could be done ( no commitment) then if it could then go through with the ordering.

Not one word of this is correct.

Why wouldn't your insurers do what you wanted them to? It sounds a reasonable request, unless your wife's driving history and they type of car aren't compatible (eg she's an 18 year old pizza delivery driver and you drive a ferrari).

There is no crime in being dual insured. You can't do it with a single insurer, but if you have policies with separate insurers then you could find yourself paying two excesses should anything happen, and the insurers may split the liability (ie pay out less). You would each then have a claim to declare for 3/5 years rather than just one of you which could mean higher premiums in the future. It costs a lot more than just the 2 policy costs, hence people don't tend to do it!!
