Barclays paid out, but not on what i claimed for

Options
Had the weirdest day of my life. Claimed against Barclays 6 weeks ago, and bingo in just 6 weeks got an upheld claim and money in the bank.
But I realised it was at least half what I knew we paid, for unemployment cover on a mortgage dating back to early 1990's. We were self employed at the time. I have no records at all just my memory I supplied all I knew especially dates.
So Ombudsman says ask for a breakdown of how the figures arrived at.
They tell me they have given us back money paid to them for dates after my claim dates.
I know I paid for unemployment cover, to cover mortgage payments from 1991 to 1999. Tried to claim in 1999 but told no, so stopped payments. This is what I tried to get back.
Now it seems we also paid them from 1999 to 2001 mortgage care, must have been hidden in our mortgages, as we did not know we paid. That is what they have given back.
But surely we must have paid it from 1991 when additional mortgages were taken out.
I am now wondering if we paid unemployment cover and a hidden mortgage care all along.
But I have nothing and they say they only have 1999 to 2001 in their records.

If they have no records and you have no records, then you can't argue about it.

The requirement on an upheld complaint is to refund what can be proven was paid.

If they have no records then they must use records you have. If neither have any records then they cant refund what they cant see you paid.

It cant be hidden. That is a claim company myth. It would be a monthly direct debit if it existed.

are you perhaps mixing up life assurance with PPI? in the early 90s, life assurance was far more common (as it is today). ASU was in its infancy in the late 80s to early 90s. However, life assurance was still typically compulsory then.

  • The money we got back is not even something we claimed for as we had been unaware we paid it. It related to a mortgage it seems. We know we did not agree to take on more expense at the time they say we did so it must have been included in the mortgage payment without our consent and they have agreed it was not appropriate.
With regards to the prior 8 years which I am claiming for the ombudsman assures me they have settled claims over 20 years old where the claimant has no records so I will try again.

That is ironic as most MPPI complaints get rejected. However, it may have been under their auto payout threshold and you got lucky.

That is correct. The person doenst need to have any records. As long as the lender has the records. Only when the bank has no records does the individual need them.
