How long for response on closing date day?

Called my solicitors on Wednesday and had them ready a bid for today at about 11.30am, closing time for the property 12pm.
They said the bid would be going in if they didn't hear from me to cancel it beforehand, and that they'd be in touch afterwards to confirm whether or not our bid has been accepted.
Just wondering how long it will take for them to get back in touch with me? Obviously i know that the offers will have been faxed over from various solicitors, which will then be given to the sellers to mull over. Sellers then have to obviously get back to the estate agent who has to inform everyone of the status of their bid.
How long does this usually take? I was expecting before the close of play today (5pm-ish) but can it take longer than that? I don't want to be ringing up and hassling my solicitor if it's standard practice to take longer than a few hours.
Anxiety is certainly kicking in!
