If you and your mechanic don't think the car is worth fixing, then why do you expect someone else to pay £1500 plus the unknown cost of fixing it?

If the car had low to mid miles with a FSH and in excellent condition then your mechanic would be fixing it and not telling you to off-load it.

You've bought a lemon and you're going to have to take a hit to get rid, the sooner you realise that the better.

    Harsh but true.

Again, jumping to conclusions without the full facts. I've taken a new job requiring me to travel a lot and I've therefore taken the opportunity to buy a new car.

Why would I believe anyone on an internet forum over the people who have actually had the benefit of looking at the car? I'm not saying you're wrong, they're right, but I don't know how you can think you know more than they do simply from the few sentences I've put on here?

Thanks for everyone that came back on the insurance question. It looks like I only need insurance if I'm keeping on a road, as it'll be in a garage I only need to SORN it.

As for what my car is worth, I find it funny how people can value my car without even knowing the mileage or condition of the interior/exterior or even seeing it! I also find it impressive that you can diagnose my fault and how much it will cost to fix when every garage I took it to has said that that's impossible!

Well we do know the condition, it's knackered and it is a banger!

For 4x the value you put on that you can buy a new/pre reg Panda or a new Dacia and 18% of their price is made up of VAT.

Love it! So the fact that it's just thr throttle sensor means it's a banger, brilliant!

Over the past few months I've been struggling with the notorious EAC FAIL so rather than going down the route of repairing it I'm leasing a brand new car and selling the Fiesta privately. This was on the advice of a mechanic mate that I trust who said this fault could cost a lot of money and there's no guarantee of fixing it.

If it's just the throttle sensor then why hasn't the mechanic fixed it by now?

    No; it's 11 years old.

    1) Because I told him no to, 2) he said there's no guarantee that replacing the throttle body will make it go away for good, but I cant market it on the basis that it may need more work in the future I can only market it for whats wrong with it now & what it needs to fix it.

Going round in circles here. But if you don't think it's worth repairing and your mechanic doesn't think it's worth repairing. Then why would anyone pay you £1500 for a 11 year old Fiesta with a possible major fault?

You asked for tips on selling it in the OP.

Put it on Ebay/Gumtree for a grand and declare the fault or fix it and sell it for more.

It does seem that the debate is going in circles.

If the OP sells it for £1.5k, nobody would believe them, if it was only £500, they wouldn't admit it.

OP, get what you can for it, preferably whilst being honest to the buyer. If you think you can get £1.3k from the dealer, that may be the best as when you have finished advertising, insuring, taking calls from companies that have buyers lined up to buy your car (for a fee) and dealing with timewasters, you may have preferred to offload it.

    This.

I have an 11 year old car that's in perfect mechanical condition. Never in a month of Sundays is it worth £1500, and neither is a common little Fester.

Then add on the fact that this Fester has been condemned by a mechanic, and you'd have to be a pretty stupid person to even consider paying £1500 for it.

I had a spotless 06-plate Lancer with FSH lined up as a "just in case" at last MOT, and it was only £1500. A considerably less bonkers proposition for the money than a knacked old rustbucket Ford :rotfl:

The dealers offer was a part-ex price by the looks of it, ie having to buy a car from them to get that price. Back when scrappage was on, people were getting £2k part-ex minimum, that doesn't necessarily mean the cars were worth £2k.
