You do it by setting aside around £50,000 and applying for Trademarks in all area's via a Trademark Attorney. The most expensive type of legal eagle!

Whilst you can Trademark a logo, you cannot if it infringes someone's word version, or is too close to another logo.

If someone else has "significant prior reputation" they have every right to object. This adds 30% at least to the cost!

In most places copyright is automatic and its simply a case of being able to prove the date that your created it or purchased the rights to it from its creator.

What it sounds like you are talking about however is more of a trademark issue and this does require explicit registration which can be a fairly costly exercise but nothing in comparison to the cost of trying to enforce your rights.

A bit of a scam really. Copyright is automatic.

There is no official registration system for copyright in the United Kingdom (UK) and most other parts of the world. There are no forms to fill in and no fees to pay to get copyright protection.

Sorry, but please give out information if you know the legal side of it.

There is a way to copyright various IP in the UK. That does not apply to the rest of the world.

The only assured system is the trademark system. You have a choice, if you wish to take over the world with respect to a design like Nike's Swoosh, you have to follow the recognised protocol.

I hope some have better sources of income to rely on than Trademark and Patent advice on here as they will starve.

antrobus is correct, it's a con. However, if you give me £25 and antrobus the other £25, we will both acknowledge and accept your registration via our https://www.iffy-copyrights-r-us.com for half the price :)

Yet another urban myth that someone is making money out of. The other famous urban myth is that all businesses have to be registered.

How do these myths get started anyway?

How different is your logo? If Nike think it is similar to their logo and it comes to their attention you could get a cease and desist letter from them.

Are logos really that important? I think there are lots of things to consider when setting up a web site and I'm not sure that a logo is top of the list.

Agree with this, and Logos change over the years:
    Even Nike do it

And agencies make a lot of money to convince corporations on how a small change to their logo will make them millions of pounds more. I saw the bill for colouring in the chevron design for Natwest, the total cost was obviously very high due to the amount of stationary, adverts, building signs etc that needed replacing (many millions of pounds) but just the agency fees to redesign the logo was massive (and only resulted in colour in)
  • Thanks. So to my understanding best thing is to spread my logo all over net and my business knowing no one can legaly copy it as I was the first person to bring it to life.
