My Consumer Rights for a Hen Party event!!

A group of us have recently been on a hen party in Brighton. We booked a chocolate event with a company to make our own chocolate, a chocolate fountain etc. I printed off the paper work and it told me it was at the Trinity hotel and this was never the case. It was somewhere completely different. After being an hour late because of this we finally got to the other hotel. The company we booked with have said that they never gave me the name Trinity Hotel, however, I had paperwork with the name Trinity Hotel on it. Unfortunately this email has been deleted and I no longer have the paperwork. :/

The whole event was very boring and not very good at all. It cost £500 altogether and was not worth it. We were told we would have 10 - 15 truffles each and only had 6 each - which were disgusting and didnt look anything like the picture and they didn't come in fancy wrappers. We were not provided with aprons, or had a chocolate fountain like we were told we would and the lady who ran it said herself it was not worth the money. We found the whole experience very poor.

I had problems from the start with them double booking us and having to nearly cancel the event at the last minute.

I want to know my rights in regards to some sort of refund for this. I dont expect a full refund but a partial refund would be satisfactory.

Thank you :D

If you've not got paperwork anymore you're going to struggle with anything.

You need to demonstrate what you paid for (from the paperwork) compared to what you got. You can also add in any time lost due to the issue of location, and travel costs between the two. Then write to the company itemising everything and requesting a refund of that amount.

If they refuse, you may need to go to small claims court, and in this case will need proof of what you paid for.
  • Thank you for your response thats great. Do you think I have any rights as an 'unsatisfied customer' of the poor quality of the actual event?

You need to quantify every loss. 'I didn't like it' counts for nothing, 'I was promised abc and got xyz' is quantifiable. Calculate your actual losses and proceed for that amount.

Strictly you have no rights as an unsatisfied customer (after all, someone with an allergy to chocolate would be unsatisfied, even if the company provided more than they agreed to!) It's much easier, as paddyrg says, to claim for your quantifiable losses.

That said, there is a legal basis for "loss of enjoyment". This is usually used in terms of holidays, but should apply here too. It's for something that can't be directly valued, though you'll need to explain exactly why it caused the loss of enjoyment. Remember, you may need to explain this to a judge so need to be quite clear.
