Esa and living with partner

Hi i currently receive ESA in the support group and lower rate disability allowance. Im currently living with my mum, and my benefit is not affected.

However ive read that if i move in with my partner my benefit would be stopped is this correct? Seems strange as my mum earns £65,000 a year and my partner earns £12,000 a year and obviously couldn't support both of us.

Thanks

If your ESA is contribution based then it will continue but if it is income based then you won't be eligible any more although you would still continue to get NI credits.

That seems crazy wheres the logic behind that. I can live with my mum who earns 5x more than my partner and its not affected.

The basic reason is because it's assumed that partners (in the romantic sense) will support each other.
'In sickness and in health' - for want of a better phrase.

If you are in the support group, and on contribution ESA (if you have been on IB/ESA all your life since 16 in one unbroken claim) your partners income will not matter.

If you are an adult, your Mum is not expected to provide for you.

If you are part of a couple, you are expected to provide for each other.

Look into claiming working tax credit if you move in with your partner
Why pay full price when you may get it YS ;)

The rules actually state that they can't assume that you do.
