Buyer not received item

Just a quick one regarding a buyer claiming they have not received a sent item... Any advice welcome.

I sent an item on Aug 2nd 1st class. Stupidly I sent the item without recorded delivery etc so before anyone jumps on me I know it is my fault!

Item sold for £60. I listed as second class but sent First so buyer would receive quicker. They have opened a case about me not sending item without even messaging me first. (I marked as dispatched on day I sent).

I have a 100% rating and have sold over 130 items and this is my first bad bad experience.

I know I should have sent recorded but I try to send cheaply at times for buyers benefit.
I have receipt with buyers post code on it.

Is it just a case of learning a lesson and simply refunding the buyer now after nine days and can I claim anything? I know i have been stupid and have myself to blame. Just want advice please

As you say you need to repay the buyer, but it does seem a bit early actually. It doesn't help that buyer has opened a case already, but I think I would email back and say that as it is barely a week would they mind waiting another few days. Just make sure you refund before eBay do.

As for claiming, standard mail covers up to £20 so you could try claiming that back.

Do have a read of the sticky postage thread for more info.

Thanks for the reply. I did find it strange that the buyer opened a case without contacting me first. I make a point of marking items dispatched asap and I sent this package the next day after payment. I also send a message to say contact me with any problems and so on.

I am not saying the man is lying and item could be lost but it does all seem a bit 'planned' judging by previous feedback also.

Whatever happens, with the cost of postage etc I am done with Ebay anyway. Just fate has ot I have a problem with my very last sale!

Cases are opened automatically when the buyer selects to contact you for 'item not received', so it may not have been their intention to open a case.

You are covered for up to £20 with normal post and a cop. But, for £60 had you wanted to insure it, it should have been Special Delivery (not signed for) or a courier with insurance.

Have a read of the postage sticky.

For future I would list any item that will sell for more than £20 as Special Delivery. There are lots of people out there who go looking for expensive items only being posted standard delivery as they know you can't prove receipt and can make a claim.

Win win for the buyer who gets a free item!

I'd be inclined to keep an eye on what they are selling!
