Hi all, I am looking for a bit of advise. I have a laptop (packard bell H5315) that has a knackered motherboard due to the power connector burning out and damaging the board. The battery is also dead. I need to find some way of getting the data off of my hard drive. Does anyone know how I could do this? I do not want to replace the motherboard, I just want to retrieve the data (only photos and songs, but daft old me never backed anything up).
Any advise would be welcome.

You need to remove the existing hard disk, usually a panel on the underside of the laptop. Then you will need a hard disk to usb adapter http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/115401
connect the hard disk to the adapter, plug into your PC USB port and you laptop hard disk appears as an additional drive on your PC.
Post back if you get stuck.0 -
I have one of these as Woonga says you need to remove the drive and connect it to the laptop drive. when I got mine it came with the connector to convert the standard IDE and power to the laptop drive connector.
Be carefull removing the drive laptop drives are more fragile than desktop drives so don't go applying any pressure to the top or bottom.0 -
There is normally a little plastic tab that you can tug on in order to remove the drive.0

I will offer the same service if your up near me, I have offered the same to others but no one is ever near me.
As donnie says there is usually a tab to aid the removal, the drives are usually in a cage and have screws holding them in place if it wont move with a little tug check for more screws, it isnt uncommon for the screw holding the panel covering the drive to also be one of retaining screws.0 -
I put the hard drive from my broken laptop into an external usb hard drive enclosure which cost £10. One like this.

Thanks to all of you. I didn't think anyone would reply. I have just managed to get a USB IDE converter on ebay for £2.19. Just need a new lap top now. I will not be buying another Packard Bell though. Nothing but trouble. Thanks again.:T0
