Attaching files makes IE fall over

I'm not all that computer savvie and have recently (last couple of months) started to experience a problem attaching files to emails. Looking in About internet explorer it appears I am running IE10. As soon as I click on the paperclip to attach a file I get an error message saying that IE has stopped working correctly and it says it will close. And nothing I do has solved this. I've looked at the various tick boxes and can't see anything that would obviously cause this. It happens on both my Hotmail and my virgin account. I don't think it's file size as this morning I only wanted to send a simple spreadsheet.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I have known users attach 120 mb spreadsheets to emails and wonder why every computer user in the office was unhappy!

A quick rule of thumb is to zip spreadsheets and don't send anything more than 2 mb.

With VM (I don't use Hotmail) you can select "load basic HTML", bottom right of the screen as it loads.

Also try a more stable platform such as Firefox and see if that works.
