removing old felt from slate roof

Hi all,

I have just bought a terraced house that has some very old and cracked felt on the whole roof front and back.

Does anyone have any experience removing old felt ?

What are the best methods and is there likely to be any old bitumin remaining on the slates - if so how do i remove this?

What sort of time frame would it take to complete the job?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

jo and den.

if it's the old hessian & pitch treatment then you can forget getting it off.

If you want to/must change it then you'll need all new slates
  • Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm not sure what type of felt it is other than it is green !

If there is a lot of bitumin that cant be removed, would it be possible to turn the slates over and re-lay?

Also - i have been told that any future buyer will not be able to obtain a mortgage because of the roof felt - does anyone know if this is the case ?

What sort of price would i expect to pay to get a terraced house re - roofed?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

no, the pitch is used to stick the felt to the slates, you'll never get it off without breaking the slates

Given you can get a mortgage on anything from a building plot to a perfectly finished house and everything in between then I don't see it's a problem. Obviously it will affect the value of the house but presumably you got one?

Re roofing.....size, area, materials will all affect the cost. Get a local roofer to have a look
  • i paid cash for the house.
  • will get a local roofer to come and have a look - thanks for your replies.
