Young Driver Insurance - Which Car

My son (17yr old) has just passed his driving test and of course now wants a car. I have been looking at various sites for insurance quotes and these have ranged from £2700 to £5000.

I have been trying different cars to compare quotes and wondered what would be the best car to get that would give the cheapest quote.

Any ideas?

probably something that a 17 year old would not want to be seen diving!
try looking at quotes for family or uncool cars

Using fake 17 yr old male who passed test yesterday - moneysupermarket - £1650 for Skoda Fabia 2 1.2 petrol (07)

    £1556 - Fiat Panda 1.2 Dynamic (07)

    £1541 - Ford KA 1.3 Style Climate (07)

    £1495 - Citroen C1 1.0 Cool

    £1460 - VW Fox (07)

    £1425 - Fiat 500 1.2 pop (59)

Those are cheapest I've found from searching - checked Renault Modus, Nissan note, skoda octavia estate, ford fiesta, Toyota Yaris and corolla, vauxhall agila

Even though FIAT 500 and VW Fox cheaper to insure. Fabia would be cheaper to buy (i wouldnt even consider the Fox) and a much better value car overall (try other years too, I just went for 2007 as likely age for first car) Ford Ka good if he doesn't mind not having much boot space - due to popularity probably pricier than Fabia but haven't checked recently. Fiat Panda good efficient 1.2, seems to hold its value well.

Also try adding yourself and/or partner as named drivers as that could lower premium further.

Obviously these wont be exactly the same as what you'll get as I had to make up details and use random postcode. Had 17 yr old as a student living at home - £500 excess. Most of these are INSURE THE BOX policies from various providers, more seem to be offering it now

Search on individual companies websites too but don't expect much, they're usually much more expensive for high risk drivers and only cheaper if using special deals like multi-car or for an experienced driver. I found aviva cheaper, and always found direct line to be at least £100 more than anywhere else.

If you have a car would be worth seeing if you could do a multicar policy with your sons car on it. Many insurers do now. Could work out cheaper - could also work out much more expensive!

Apparently I spent an hour and a half doing this! Hope it's helpful :)

just insured my sons vw polo 1.2 for the first time. he passed his test in feb this year, but found it to be around £500ish cheaper to waite for his 18th birthday before insuring. used directline as a added car linked to my policy {multicar} and he got a 20% discount bringing his premium down to £2100 inc business use as he is a mechanic and sometimes collects customer cars on the works policy.
and was also told by directline that he will get 2yrs ncd after his first year

Sounds like good deal for a Polo. Good advice on possibility of waiting til a bot older to insure. I assume that extra years NCD will only be applicable if he renews with Directline?

But I wouldn't recommend a Polo to the OP as he wants the cheapest and its certainly not cheap to buy, maintain or insure.

He only needs business use if he uses his own car for business.

IanRi you must live in a much better place than us, it was £8k for a Panda for my son and £15k for a 1.2 Corsa.
Even having him as a named driver was over £3k
The cheapest we could find was a Kia Picanto.

    I got £1800 for 07 Kia Picanto

I'm not surprised Corsa was expensive, but gosh that sounds rediculously expensive for a panda!

    What year/engine was it?

I put student down as occupation is your son employed? I'm going to try a different postcode and see difference for the details I gave.

    - was £2500 for Picanto using a postcode for the most horrendous area I can think of nearby - and considering its the worst area of a place with pretty bottom league statistics and reputation anyway I think that's pretty bad. Panda in Crudville gone up by £600 to £2100.
There must be more to it than just the area for such a huge difference. Four times the price for you? Mental

    Crazy isn't it?
Panda was an 04 1.2 Dynamic (my daughter's)
Son (17) passed his test last month, no convictions or anything like that.
He is employed as a trainee landscape gardener.

  • Thanks for all your suggestions. Waiting until my son is 18 was something I had thought of because one of the insurers had said he couldn't pay by DD if he was under 18 (18 in September so not long to wait). I also added myself as an additional driver but I had an accident in 2008 so thought that might have put the premium up as well. My 5 yr anniversary of accident runs out in October so perhaps wait until then as well. I also managed to get cheaper quotes by putting the excess up to £1000. Do you think this is a good idea?

worth trying putting the excess up as this can be covered by a separate policy for about £60ish to cover the excess if he did need to make a claim. you can get a quote from these guys

but remember you have to pay it first then claim it back
