Creaking Floorboards

Firstly I apologise if this is the wrong are to post this, or even the wrong site.

Hi,

I live in a bottom floor flat and the owner of the flat above me is refusing to fix creaking floorboards. The tenant he has in there at the moment walks around the flat non stop, including throughout the night. This wakes my partner and I most nights and we struggle to get back to sleep.

I contacted the owner directly and he originally got a joiner in to screw the floorboards in the bedroom down but this has not resolved the problem. The tenant continues to walk around at all hours of the morning and also has friends over most nights and sits in the bedroom.

I have asked the owner to rectify the problem but he has refused as it would cost quite a bit as he has told us that the flat has damp issues.

Is there anything that I can do or do I need to just put up with the noise and continue to go to my work feeling like a zombie?

ps. The problem is all over the flat not just the room

My house suffers creaking floor boards. We have had them checked , screwed down, put in thick underlay but my upstairs floors still creak. We are used to it now.

  • I wouldn't mind so much if it were just me and my girlfriends house and it was only me and her in it, but because its the neighbour above and she wakes us up most nights, its a nightmare :(

One of the downsides of living in a flat tbh.

You'll just have to put up with it or move.

I have neighbours liek that above, he's a pain in the harris, but I manage to zone out most of the time now.

I remember when I was in London for a few years on the Heathrow flight path, it was a nightmare for the first few weeks, then you just don't notice.

You need to zone out, go to sleep with the radio on low?

Partial solution would be for your neighbor to stop walking around the bedroom at night. Have you spoken to them?. Start by explaining that screwing the floorboards down hasn't solved the problem.

If you can't stop the creaking have you considered masking it or blocking it out?

    Ear plugs to block it?

Have some other sound source in the room to mask out the creaking, like a rain/sea/storm/water noise generator to cover it up. This sort of thing:
