trouble with letting agents

Hi All. Hope i have got to the right section. I payed a high street letting agent £270 cash for credit & employment check on our family before we were able to rent a property. We are a family of 4. Unfortunately we did not pass the credit check so were unable to go ahead with the rental. I have asked the letting agent to let me have a copy of all the details he received as i paid for them but he has refused can he do this & would i be able to ask for any money back if he did not do all that he was supposed to check.

Many Thanks for any reply's

It would be better to ask on the House Buying, Renting and Selling board, although some of the people with expertise in this area may also turn up here.

Mickog, you got a good answer on your earlier thread:
That was nearly a week ago... have you sent off your Subject Access Request?

There is no law that would allow you this information without a SAR, so as you have been advised to request one this is what you should do.

At this stage you have to accept that you failed the checks and your money is gone, it's up to you to prove otherwise.

Find an agency who don't charge massive upfront, non-refundable fees. There are very few about, but there are some. Our current agency barge about £130 and said if they rejected us they are refundable. We found another agency who operated a similar scheme. And our last agency charged about this non-refundable then a signing fee of another £100 so your losses are more manageable.

The fees are refundable, see OFT guidence.

If they don't refund you take them to court, you'll get your money back.
