Free range eggs for less

Because of the recession less people are buying free range eggs but what happens to the surplus? Well many are sold as value colony eggs. Always look at the code on the eggs in the cage egg section if it begins with a 1 they're free range. This is most often the case in Morrisons supermarkets.

Yes, always check. I have seen free range eggs in the pound shop, and organic eggs sold as free range in Sainsburys.

Eggs are one thing that I like to pick up from Lidl - 95p for 6 free range eggs there which is cheaper than basic caged hen eggs in a lot of supermarkets. If i'm not going near a Lidl I do sometimes pick them up from Morrisons though so I'll remember to check the codes!

Asda have a box of 15 Free range eggs for £3 often they are at 2 for £4 no compromise on hen welfare here and if two boxes are too many share with a friend or family member.

A few work colleagues keep chickens and in exchange for my empty egg boxes I get 6 free eggs a week (I go through about a dozen).

There was one annoying person in work who had a small farm and used to sell his free range egg and lecture us that the free range eggs in the supermarket were not really free range. I never bought his eggs as he was so annoying!

After getting the tip from one of the lovely posters on here a while back, I've found that Sainsburys very often have free-range in the basics boxes - I find that if you manage to get one eggbox with '1' coded eggs, you'll often find several of them in the same outer box. If I look at another outer box & they are '2's, I just move on to the next one.

Don't often shop at Morrison's but will definitely have a look next time i go, thanks.

He may have been annoying but he may also have been right. There have been quite a few cases of fraud in the free range and organic egg trade and, in any case, some interpretations of what 'free range' means might surprise a lot of consumers..

My local Asda usually has 6 medium free range eggs for £1. At the moment they've also got large ones for the same price.

We saw free range on tv once, it was about a billion chickens in a barn, looked like a rush hour train station, I'd imagined them in fields laying eggs under hedges and that. Still, better than being in a cage.

Was going to say the same, not sure why people get annoyed with people saying how it is.. nothing changes until more people realise what goes on.

Seeing the state of the so called free range chickens who go up for rescue after their year alive laying eggs is done, they still come out in bad condition from these huge 'free range' flocks, mostly unable to get to the outside because they are all packed in so much. Seeing a chicken come out with not many feathers is awful - would be animal cruelty if the same was done to a pet.

True free range is harder to find. I don't buy them from supermarkets any more, I think the larger suppliers will probably have the larger flocks and I don't see how true free range could supply really cheap eggs, they are cheap for a reason. Also to bear in mind that unless they are organic (or from Waitrose) they could well be fed on GM feed, which I am sure keeps the price down..

I currently buy Hen Nation eggs. http://www.goodfoodnation.co.uk/hen-nation.php I've also bought locally from small farms etc where the hens are outside, still no guarantee though. Prices in these small places tend to be more reasonable than supermarkets though so worth checking out.
