Sorry!! EGR valve was taken off and cleaned by rac when car first broke down. Dunno about CAT and DPF all I know is car says D-CAT on side and what toyota told me!!0
-
Lol no mask was worn was more fear on their faces from having to deal with a clearly stressed and irate woman with two young children in tow, on holiday with not a clue of how she was going to get home 200 odd miles away with a broken car and a shed load of luggage!! 0

Don't suppose you know if the DPF is self-regenerating or not?
Its my understanding the EGR valves can actually be blanked, although some say its not recommended as it chokes the engine but many do nonetheless. So I'm wondering if that isn't the issue.0 -
I have no idea I do know they have tried to re gen the DPF and failed and they have tried some other things and it cleared the fault but less than half aisle down the road the car went in to fail safe mode.0

Hope you get this resolved, but you really have to be looking a bit more cynically at the whole deal. I find it impossible to believe that someone bought a diesel Avensis Estate six years ago and just took it to church and back. Check it's history in every way you can to find out if the trader has been telling porkys, if it has been a private-hire, he has to refund you.0

7k miles per year... that's a long way to church, 134 mile round trip per week
But no, I presume it's more of a case the car was used for pleasure only... ie a sunday drive which is entirely possible for many walks of life from retired people to people who don't drive to work.
Although considering an owner-driver cabbie would do about 35-45k per year and if two drivers easily hit 70-80k it seems highly unlikely it was a taxi. Even if it was -- i'm not sure why this entitles op to a refund? How the previous owner used the vehicle is hardly a material fact. If say the previous owner was a sales rep would it be the same? Or a doctor on call? Not really and no different.0 -
Googling the d-cat exhaust, there is a long section which does have a cat which is megabucks, and a dpf that regenerates by burning fuel.
The Toyota dealer would have quoted for replacing with new parts so can understand a high quote.
Blocked egr are common and i doubt the RAC gave it a massive clean at the roadside. I would at least get the dealer to whip that out to see how blocked it is. Given you reported that quickly I would expect the dealer to do that cheaply.
Then you need to know how bad the exhaust is. If it is the dpf then it needs removing and burning off, though even that might not cure it.
At worst you might get the dpf removed to at least get you going while you explore options...assuming the dpf is blocked0 -
I Would issue the dealer with a deadlock letter, instructing them that under sale of goods act the vehicle has has sold you is not fit for purpose.
You are aware the sale of goods act overrides any warranty, that the dealer is aware that the car has several faults and refused to rectify or remedy the situation and this therefore the letter serves as a letter before action, that if the dealer refuses to remedy the situation or make contact regarding the situation upon expiry of this letter before action you shall explore two possibly avenues .
Either repair of the vehicle to satisfactory condition to make it fit for purpose : Quote attached or a claim for rejection and recovery of purchase price.
Then STAMP + POST + Recorded delivery : NO E-Mail.Be happy...;)0 -

I would try to reject the car if you can.
If I was the dealer I would probably accept a liability for the EGR as that was reported as a pre-existing condition (and possibly why the previous owner traded it in).
As for the exhaust - if it is the dpf - then a dealer could claim it's the OP driving style that hasn't allowed it to regenerate properly.
That one is a harder fight.
I would also ask in the Toyota Owners Club forum about known problems with the engine

To complicate things even more, the 5th injector (which pumps diesel into the exhaust to burn off the dpf) can also block due to a software fault..and cause the cat to fail and dpf to block
That could be classed as a pre-existing fault.

Did Toyota issue your dealer with the error codes their scanner picked up as otherwise we are really making best guesses.0 -
Hi the toyota garage have given all the information they got to the dealer. I have been there today and they have agreed to change the EGR valve, and then road test and see how it goes. They then went on to say that if other faults came up with the DPF then they would make sure they were fixed. I said if it was not fixed then I would be looking at asking for a refund as the car was not fit for purpose under soga. From what I understand the car was owned by an elderly couple. In the past year it has done less than a thousand miles. It has fsh but whether tht is absolute proof of its history I don't know0
