Thanks that's great info and helps a lot.
Are there any places that are best for swimming in the lake?

Lenno has a lido with steps down into the lake and a small beach, there's, also a lido at Cadenabbia with a pool floating on the lake and beach and there's one in Menaggio, but as above, I wouldn't recommend there.

Also if you go to Varenna and walk around the wall there are numerous little beaches that were very quite when we were there.

Are you at the Brittania Excelsior?
The shop next to it on the lane sells tickets for the local bus, and the bus top is right outside. It will also be worth buying a 4 or 7 day pass for the ferry. You can use either the car ferry which stops at Caddenabia, or the passenger ferry which stops at Villa Carlotta. Don't agree with Peachyprice - the ferry stops at about 23.15 during the season, (I was there in May). The Bernina Express is a fabulous trip. St Moritz is a bit of a concrete jungle, albeit a classy one!. Be careful about timing, all the shops shut at about 12.30 and don't reopen till 4pm. Just a couple of small tourist shops and restaurants and cafes will be open.
Driving is nerve wracking & parking is difficult, you can get everywhere by either car or ferry - much less stressful. Enjoy yor stay.

Only the car ferry runs that late, the frequent foot passenger ferries finish much earlier.
