free versions are just as good, the don't trust argument means people waste money, the virus protection is the same, the added features are not necessary.

and for the ones liking free AV then this is just like free hosting, their is nothing for FREE, their will be ads or limited features, which may be OK for joe blogs and his granny, but if you are serious about a business and you run your business from a PC/Laptop then you should invest in a paid Internet Security package and not just a basic AV0 -

Most free ones are only free for personal use anyway, so you can't legitimately use them for a business. Also for businesses where a server is utilised, it makes sense to install a paid for package on the server, which automatically updates the workstations and provides protection for the likes of Exchange server etc.

But its very basic.
Ive use Kaspersky Internet Security for well over 10 years without issues.. Tried Kaspersky Pure for a couple of years which was better until i got Win 8 and for all their claims it is Win8 compatible, it turns out under Win8 Pure only gives AV protection. I only found this out when i contacted them on why pure was not working, so they gave me a copy of KIS 2013 to use.0 -

1. avast free does that, for free.
2. avast free does that for free. Most if not all isp's and webmail companies also scan for viruses.
3. no idea what that means, but it sounds really important, that's marketing for you.
most people have a router and windows firewall two layers to stop people casually looking at personal files, and banking sites use encryption and various other authentication methods to keep passwords safe.
4. Avast free has No ads, apart from a very occasional two second information popup every month or so, and popups are configurable.
Internet security makes it sound really important, it's pure marketing speak.
The op didn't mention business use - if you're a business, then legally there aren't many free one's apart from mse. For everyone else, free ones are fine, but as always some are better than others, and some free ones are better than other paid for ones, but they all provide virus protection, which is the point of them, the rest is hype to make people pay up.
Very basic, as you put it, also means a faster machine, and minimum bloat.!!

marketing by av companies, not by you.
and yes it does.
I've heard this sort of discussion in a couple of very famous high street stores, salespeople trying to worry grannies to make them cough up for Norton.!!
