Im sorry but contribution based JSA is affected by savings. If you have over £16,000 you cant get it.

    Really? When did that change?

Surprisingly, it is Income Based JSA which is affected by savings because savings provide an income.

(Hadn't ignored others correcting the statement - but I hadn't refreshed my browser and missed the other responses.)

Says here about only income based JSA being affected by savings.

In that case why was I asked if I had savings over £16K, seems a bit strange to me.

it maybe so the transfer from contribution to income based is smooth, I know when I moved from one to the other I was told I had to reclaim as they had to have the savings info etc then they realised my original claim had provided all that info so I moved over without any more paper work.

Sounds like they have two systems up and running, one where they realise they might as well get all the facts in one go and another where they like to create work for themselves and do two claims instead of just the one.

The job centre that you get sent too could well be perfectly fine. As long as you do what is required of you/ what you agreed to in the job seekers agreement then you will be ok.

As sniggins said, it's for at the end of the 6 months to decide whether you would be entitled to income based. They also asked me that when I was medically retired.

I have to say, I've been treated well by staff in the job centre anytime I've been in the position where I had to sign on. Twice I think it was. And a few WFI.

I think what we all have to remember is, people tend to tell us the bad stories about what happens at these places, rather than the good experiences

All I can say is a big thank you to you all for the information, it's been a revelation and enlightening. The impression I get now is it's down to your luck whether you get a good/bad/indifferent/overworked advisor where you live, how much or how little work is available in your particular area. The jobcentre has a hell of a lot more power than 30 years ago.
    Cheers.

You treat the job centre staff with respect and they should do the same and a sensible adult should be able to job search perfectly well without needing assistance.

Remember, the stories you read on here are just that, stories. Usually written by people with an axe to grind. You don't hear from the people that are getting along perfectly well with the Job Centre staff.

Coming up to joining the dole queue at the end of the year due to redundancy and haven't been near a jobcentre for 30 years.
Now, from what I've heard and read, it looks like the jobcentre has turned into some sort of Gestapo unit so the question is do I have to sign on immediately after termination date and will I get interrogated if I don't ?
    Brilliant. :rotfl:

I will do but it's not until the end of the year, just starting to get prepared now.
I'm looking for work now, on the online jobcentre thingy daily for my area but not very encouraging at the mo.
    Cheers.
