Not a big fan of how the DVLA operate but credit where credits due, I posted off my application for a new photo licence only last Monday (5days ago) and today have just received it in the post, fair play to them for that.

In the interest of balance - we don't want them getting big headed!

I have to renew my licence every three years (medical). The last one lapsed at the end of May, so I applied for the replacement at the beginning of May. No change of condition or circumstance. After much chasing and worrying, I finally received the current one at the end of July
The DVLA assured me that I could continue to drive without the licence as long as my doctor was happy - but how would I prove that to eg the police? Car hire company? Any holiday would have been well and truly spoiled, as my mobility is very restricted.
Still, I don't have to worry for the next couple of years.....must remember not to book holidays in the summer.......[0 -

I have to go through this and I think the delay is because part of the process is to write to your GP/specialist regarding your medical condition. Obviously if the doctors are slow at replying it can really delay things.0 -

Can you to just apply earlier? If it usually takes say two months apply two months before it expires, or can you only apply a certain time before? If you find you are drinking too much give this number a call. 0845 769 75550 -
A friend of mine, he's 61 and has to renew his licence at regular intervals 'cos of a medical problem has just had a letter from the Dvla to say he needs to go for a eye test before they'll renew it. His illness has nothing to do with his eyes, is this a new thing they're starting ?Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

The obvious way around this not to surrender your license when you apply for your replacement, and mark the form to say you've lost it. That way, you still have your old license should the police or a hire company need it, and you can destroy it yourself when your replacement arrives.0 -
The problem with this is that the licence has an expiry date on it - I doubt whether a hire company would accept an expired licence?[0
