Can I cash a cheque instantly? I need the money urgently!

Hello, this is my first post here on the MSE forum, but I have been reading them for quite a while and have found some incredible advice and tips on here! I was trying to find some advice on a problem I have, but I can't seem to find any definite answers either here or elsewhere on the internet. So here goes...
I have a cheque from my university (payable to me) and I require the cash as soon as possible. I was wondering where I could cash it instantly (in York), and how much it would cost? Also, I have read that if I take the cheque into a branch of the same bank it was issued from (Barclays), they would pay me the amount in cash instantly if I have a valid ID and a bank card, is this true? I'm really struggling for money at the moment so I'd really appreciate some advice on this matter!
Thanks

Barclays won't give you cash for it, no.
You could take it to one of those cheque cashing places but they will take a percentage as a fee, that varies from place to place so try googling.

go to your bank and ask for an overdraft if you don' have one already. Not suggesting you get into the habit of borrowing but they're handy if you use them wisely. you can pay in the cheque at the same time so you'd only pay a few days interest assuming the OD is enough.
otherwise, yeah, one of those cheque cashing places but don't now the charges so best pop in and ask.0 -
I don't know about all banks, but I know banks such as TSB will use the cheques value to reduce the interest you pay on your account from the 2nd working day, so if you had an overdraft the interest for the 2 days may well be less than what is charged by an express cheque clearance shop.0
