Good Evening, I recently turned 18 and applied for the BA Avios American Express card. I have a part time job with 5 k income. Whilst filling the form out it asked for household income. As I live with my parents I googled and found household income was combined income of those sharing same house over age of 15. So I entered 78k. I was unable to be go given a instant decision Surprise surprise.
I was contacted and asked to verify my ID. I send this to them , I spoke to a person whom reviewed the documents so said congratulations you have been successful but just needs to be finished but card would be posted put to me. I contacted the next day to check if all was done when I was informed they have now rejected my application as household does not include parents. They verbally told me I was successful and hence my credit score has a footprint now.
Should I appeal. I have no expenses as parents cover these.

Ps had to pay documents to be verified etc and postage too.

Nope, you are wasting your time.
Probably best to try your own bank first.

You'll be fortunate if they do not report the application as fraudulent. Check your credit report in a month or so and look for any entries in the CIFAS section. If there are none you're fine. If there is an entry you could appeal against that and that appeal should succeed because the first definitions available for household income are for the income of all those in the household.

You have no other useful basis for an appeal. You applied for the card so an application search is fine. You were declined. That's also fine because of your income level. Companies have minimum incomes that they will accept. Your costs are the normal costs that can be associated with any application for credit and there is no basis there for a claim of costs.

It's mostly pointless but you could complain about them specifying household income but not restricting who can be considered to be in the same household in some clearly visible place that could have prevented you from making the application. Households can also include things like students sharing a house and they probably would not want those to be considered a household either.
  • The credit search would be recorded whether you're successful or not - there's no difference on that front. Appealing won't do you any harm but I think you're probably unlikely to be successful.

Household income is usually taken to mean a spouse rather than parents. The customer service operator made a mistake but nothing had been signed so there's not a great deal you can do.

You're are perhaps setting your sights a little high going for an Amex card straight away. They are a premium brand and you'd normally be expected to have at least a couple of years of good credit management under your belt (and an income of your own) before they take you on.

As has already been said, try your bank first. If you have no luck there then go for Aqua, Vanquis or Capital One.

It's on the first page when applying online, and I'm sure any paper form would have it too:

"Please check all these statements are true
You have an Annual Household Income of £30,000 (ie: your personal income plus partners income)"

    ^this, unfortunately!

Admire your optimism, but an Amex (other than LLoyds or MBNA) as a first CC is pretty much out of the question, unless you're loaded :p.
