Cheap telephone rental deals

If you're a light phone user and just want a line for Broadband and don't make a lot of calls, this is definitely a way to save money. And since BT manage all of the telephone infrastructure, no risk really paying upfront for a year.

Primus Saver was the first company I heard of, doing a £99.99 a year prepay deal, and you even get £15 cashback* via TopCashBack if you're a new customer, so that is currently the cheapest line rental out there. It even includes free weekend calls. I was with Primus Saver for a year, and the service was excellent. The staff always very helpful and it's a free phone number too for support.

Sky, BT and possibly other telephone line providers also offer the £99.99 annual prepaid deal. But usually you have to ASK them, they don't always advertise it on their site.

Here's two more top-tips for saving money on your line rental and calls I've discovered and have been using:

1) 18185.co.uk - This service is completely free to join, and gives you FREE local calls, any time of the day and SUBSTANTIAL discounts on 08 numbers, international and even mobile numbers (you can call the US for half a pence a minute). It's voip (voice over internet) but works very well and normally sounds as good as a regular landline. You just dial 18185 in front of your number. Some phone handsets will do this automatically. You can also use it on your mobile (but you have to dial a different 020 number).

2) Skype virtual landline numbers - This service is great value for money and offer the advantage of a truly portable landline that can direct landline calls to your mobile phone with no cost. Plus you can make FREE local calls, any time of the day from Skype to landlines. You can even choose your own telephone number for a specific city near you to get local rates, or you can choose a number for another country so relatives or business customers can call you at local rates. Very handy! To rent a "virtual landline" and get your own number costs from just £2.88 a month including VAT if prepaid for year in advance, so it's great value for money. You can choose your number from a wide range too, and some are very memorable numbers. There's also a lot of fancy features which you wouldn't always get on a normal landline free of charge, such as Voicemail, caller ID and the ability to divert calls to any Skype account. I have been using a Skype number to make and receive calls, and it works pretty good. Obviously it's not as clear as a proper landline as it's voip and dependent on how good your mobile signal is, but if you're staying still and not walking around, it's rock solid and works perfect. You can sign-up and get your own number for 30 days to try it out for around £3.50. Get your headset a Bluetooth headset, and you're sorted! Landline-to-mobile, handsfree

* I think the cashback offer only applies now if you take broadband with them at the same time.

Are we talking about paying for the line rental in advance? I payed sky for line rental in advance but it was £10 a month so £120 a year upfront, rather than £15 a month if paid monthly.

Yeah exactly. I think I also paid £120 and got unlimited broadband with Sky for £2.50 a month for 12 months by haggling!

I think Primus Saver still may be the cheapest line rental then at £99 even without the cashback. I was tempted to give their ridiculously cheap half-price £2 a month broadband for 6 months a try but they had an 18 month contract! They even offer £15 credit on first bill, in addition to cashback (for new customers), but you have to pay a £8 delivery charge for the router.

Well it's free per minute, but they charge a 4p or 5p connection fee for each call.

Where did you get this information from, any link ?. I have done search intensively as well as calling them the cheapest one you will get is £120 e.g. when you pay in advance for 12 months, so not £99.99.
