I read previous forums, and it sounded like Santander could be a complete nightmare..

You should have read this forum. We would have told you that most banks will allow you one mistake and refund. Santander are actually more generous then most and allow you to make mistakes again as long as it is only once a year.

  • Hi

I recently went over my overdraft.. I know (before u all start bombarding me with this) i should have monitored my finances more and shouldn't have got into this mess.. But unfortunately I did..

Anyway.. I emailed the bank stating this was the first time this had happened and expressed remorse, and said I thought £150 of charges was a bit harsh and could there be a compromise.

I was hoping for them to reduce the charges or spread them over a couple of months, I sent the email and hoped for the best.

2 days later I received a phone call to say they had received my email and they explained why my card continued to get accepted, even though I was over my overdraft.. The very kind man, ringing from Santander in Belfast, then said as this was the first time this had happened, and the last I reassured him.. As a goodwill gesture, they would waive the charges. I was amazed.. I read previous forums, and it sounded like Santander could be a complete nightmare.. But thought I'd post this so people know, just approach the situation genuinely and remorsefully, and they can be reasonable too! I will never get in this situation again, and it wasn't nice at all!!

    Hope this is helpful,

    Cheers

I was in the same situation but they had spread the charges on three months and while they told me on phone they will waive all my charges they had at the end just waive the one that they put on the first month.
  • For your information, since my last post here I have called my bank in order to reverse the payment due to a card dispute(I paid using my debit card) and they have sent me a form to fill and asked me on phone to bring the form to a bank branch that will fax the form to them. However, when I brought the form to the local branch, one of local branch manager asked to see me in his form and locked me inside this last for 10 minutes after he took the form to fax. When this manager came back he gave me a confirmation of the fax but until present I have not received the refund nor any explanation letter from Santander : instead I have received another form (same then the previous one to fill). The next day after this Santander manager locked me inside his office for 10 minutes I have made a complaint to Santander by phone but until present the refuse to provide a complaint reference number.
