    If you act responsibly and do not spend money you do not have, then you have nothing to fear from credit ratings....

    That is possibly the most asinine and inaccurate statement that I've read on here (with the exception, perhaps, of your various other negative, sarcastic, unhelpful and ill-advised statements that you've made elsewhere in this forum).

    Let me parse this for you to make it really clear, since I assume that, unlike me, you don't spend a great deal of time in courts representing both companies and individuals in contractual disputes:

    1. Companies in the UK frequently make contractual claims that are completely spurious and legally unsound;

    2. In order to secure such claims, companies sometimes use the service of collection agencies, who threaten to affect peoples' credit ratings, regardless of whether the claims are legitimate;

    3. People are so scared of having their credit ratings affected, that they frequently pay completely spurious claims to collections agencies because (a) they can't afford to defend any legal action and (b) their lives can be seriously affected by their credit rating, even though they know they've done nothing wrong.

    THE POINT IS THAT PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE NOTHING WRONG, AND WHO DO NOT LEGITIMATELY OWE MONEY TO ANYBODY, FREQUENTLY PAY ANYWAY BECAUSE OF THE EXTORTION TACTICS USED BY COLLECTION AGENCIES.

    Now, is that clear enough for you?

    I don't usually wish ill on anybody, but I'm prepared to make an exception for you, as you seem to do little but belittle the posts of others, make ignorant and ill-founded responses and generally put down and minimize any issues that others have on these forums - I can only hope that one day you get completely screwed-over by some monolith of a corporation and you finally empathize with what others have gone through and experienced. I think it'll be character-building.

    All you have to do is manage your finances in a responsible manner and you have nothing to fear from credit ratings.

    OP bounced a cheque, OP would appear to still owe money, OP should not be suprised that he's credit rating is in danger due to his own actions.

    Perhaps if you could explain to me why people should not be responsible for their own actions?

    Um, no, because since my previous posts, I've gone back over your previous posts, as well as your myspace page, which has confirmed my suspicion that you are simply a trolling wind-up merchant, having your fun. You're a caricature, nothing more, which is why you repeat the same nonsense again and again. Bye...............

    Same old story, innit, when all else fails, yell troll....

    See spineless capitulation.

    But back to the problem in hand, what defense is there to a person who bounces cheques?

    Your help guys is much appreciated! dave

    bravedave, essentially, you need to do two things, really:

    (1) Make sure that the hotel is paid directly by you (if this hasn't been done so already), as the hotel can reimburse the collection agency, if the agency has already paid the hotel; and

    (2) Refuse to pay anything above and beyond what you originally agreed to pay the hotel, unless you had been put on notice prior to checking-in that the hotel used a collection agency, and that you'd be liable for any collection fees.

    Whatever you do, unless you were put on notice as aforesaid, don't deal directly with the agency, as you have no contract with them.
