Mobile Number Queries

Hi

I've got a number which I've had for years. I know want to keep this number but put the phone onto pay as you go.

Do I have to stay with the same phone provider in order to keep the number or can I take the number to a different provider on PAYG only.

I will literally be using the phone to make a maximum of 5 mins per month in calls and to receive texts messages so I won't have any benefit from a contract/plan.

In order to keep the number on PAYG you will need to port out to another provider for at least one month (only way to keep the number is to use the PAC). You could then port back to your original provider or any other for that matter, again using the PAC.

    Rubbish!

A PAC is not required to change from contract to PAYG e.g. see here

If you want to stay with the same provider phone them up and tell them what you want to do. So long as your contract is up there should be no problem keeping the same number.

If you want to move to a new provider, ask your existing provider for a PAC code and give it to the new provider. Warning: some providers insist you give them the PAC code when you join up. Most will happily let you bring your old number across later (so you can make sure you're happy with the new network)
