If it is a new clutch required, definitely get a few quotes.

I had quotes ranging from £350-£601 for my car.

I would do if they got back to me! I've rung 3 garages in Harrogate and only one got back to me. ARGH.

I'm still driving it and I've got to drive to Kendal and back on Sunday, me thinks I'll only be going at fifty miles an hour. I'm just annoyed that the clutch has gone. I don't ride the clutch, OH doesn't so whoever did the first 50,000 miles must have been destroying the clutch

Why are you annoyed? It's over 10 years old, part of owning an older car is things will need replacing.

And the previous owner probably didn't ride the clutch - you only have to look at the miles done vs. age to see they probably just did short journeys pottering around town = lots of clutch use.

If the engine noise remained the same but the NEEDLE shot up and back down, it could well be a fault with the dials. they get dry solder and this can happen. We had a fiesta at work that would be fine, then for a few seconds the needles would go haywire, showing you doing 140mph, then nothing, all the revs, no revs, middle amount of revs....

You need to establish if it is dials are giving an accurate reflection of what the engine is doing, in which case it sounds very much like clutch slip, of if the dials themselves are faulty in which case it's them that need attention.

Not sure about the stalling method. Sounds complex.
When the car is rolling, put it in second and accelerate hard. If the clutch is on it's way out, you will see and hear engine revs rise much faster than the speed, not in proportion like normal. As the car gains speed you may then see revs fall or level off even though you don't let off the accelerator, as the clutch begins to bite again.

A clutch for a fiesta is no big deal. Mr clutch or similar should be able to do one for £300ish all in I would expect. If it's the dials then there are small businesses that specialise in fixing these issues, returning your clocks to you within 48 hours fixed. Saves probelms with milage indication etc (which can be link between clocks and ECU in some cars to frustrate attempts to clock them).

50,000 thats not bad for its age. I know someone that burnt a brand new clutch out in 7000 miles.

    That was a fiesta also.

Revving to the red line reversing off the drive every morning. ouch...

I'm annoyed because its gone within a year of owning it. Thats not to say I think it shouldn't have gone...I just mean when you buy a used car you hope nothing goes wrong, yes I know thats part of owning a used car but I'm allowed to be slightly annoyed at a costly fix :)

It did do the thing where the needle moved but seeminly had no reason but I've since read thats possibly a Ford thing. I think its definitely the clutch, I know I can speed up in 4th gear without too much pressure but I can't put my foot down or the dial goes crazy (and noisy) and then comes back down to where it should be.

I'm pretty ignorant of how long clutches should last, probably because my other halfs old fiesta's clutch lasted 120k so I assumed it was all similar. Hopefully if I get a new clutch thats the only major expensive I'll have. Having said that I am now saving enough to budget for £500 repairs every year. If it doesn't get spent one year well it will stay saved!

yep, sounds like clutch if the engine sounds like it's revving as it happens. Phone local garage, mr clutch, and one other place on recommendation and see where you get.
A clutch is a routine job, so there shouldn't be any nasty surprises.

As it happens I've struck some luck.I was quoted £372 at the garage and similar at other places. I posted in a Facebook group for mums in my town and a woman said her husband might be able to help. So he gave me a call and is taking the car tomorrow and will do it for £290 including the part. He does work at a local garage which my fathertobeinlaw uses hes basically going to use his mates garage on Saturday. So essentially is earning some money for himself but I also know he works at a reputable garage. I think £290 is very good. Also means I don't have to take any time off work :)
