W8
I had Vista before and that worked fine, I need to know the approximate cost to uninstall 8 and try W7 as I've heard 7 is good.
Or any other advice would be helpful, I don't feel confident enough to uninstall and install a new programme.

Expect to pay at least £250 for a legal copy of W7.
The trick with W8 is to only use the Desktop interface. Don't use *any* of the metro interface, expect the tile for Desktop. The metro interface is designed for mobile devices.
Once you're in W8 Desktop, it's not that different from Vista or W7.0 -

MMMMMMMMMMMMM, interesting just a bit over my head, I like low tech.
Thanks anyway DCM.0 -
It's a bit of a pain to switch to Win8 from a previous version of Windows, but is generally worth the effort. IE10 launched from the Metro screen will probably drive you nuts, but you can run it in a more familiar way from the desktop - or install Chrome, which only runs under Desktop mode anyway.
BBC iPlayer and TalkTalk webmail didn't work under Metro IE10 the last time I checked.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards. There is a whole bunch of third-party programs which will give Windows 8 a good semblance of a Windows 7 desktop appearance, probably mentioned in Lum's post, among which StartIsBack and Classic Shell are free or nearly free. Easily Googleable!0

As above, just bung Classic Shell on it and it'll look just like W7 again. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Even simpler is Classic Start, works for me, 8.1 will be along shortly.

There will still be life in things like classic start for those who really want the old style Start button. All the new Start button in 8.1 (in the preview anyway) does is take you from the Desktop to the "Metro" Start screen. The same as pressing the Windows button on the keyboard.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the In My Home MoneySaving, Energy and Techie Stuff boards.
