Any Springer I have ever known never walks to heel on the lead, however when they're off the lead they walk like angels! :D
  • if not been mentioned im short of time atm didnt want to read and run, HALTI is what brought our springer under control.

when he pulls the halti tightens around the muzzle making it incomfortable to pull for the pup, when pulling halti kicks on you turn the opposit direction.

you could also temp no pulling with chicken peices, when pulling call heal and spring out a peice of chicken, give chicken only when fully sat next to you with full concerntration on you.

But why use a halti if it makes is uncomfortable for the dog? I must admit I used a halti for a short time for one of my previous dogs but it never worked. He hated it and I still found that it didn't stop him pulling.

Each to their own but I have yet to see a trainer or behaviourist that recommend haltis. Most of them are very anti haltis in fact as lots of dogs find them distressing and they can be painful and uncomfortable. A well fitting soft harness is a much much better option

Actually I got the Dogmatic because it was recommended by a trainer. I did try the two ended lead on a harness with my German Shepherd, it was useless! To be honest, I very quickly stopped using it as he could pull me all over the place with it, and my arm and shoulder became very painful!

Haltis are more uncomfortable than the Dogmatic as it is just webbing and not padded. Additionally my Shepherd found he could twist his head and one bite would render it useless, me holding a lead hanging on the floor and him grinning at me!

Once he tried the Dogmatic on, it was like a 'ooo that's better'. Never had a problem since.
  • the halti is not a designated do it all on its own stop pulling device, you have to make the effort with it, your dog will hessistate whilst it clamps on when the dog pulls, this is where you come in, issueing commonds and turning away or offering up a treat once the dog has sat to your commands and in compliance.

its an aid not a cure seen many people use one incorrectly thinking that the halti will train your dog. much better resolution to training than a chalk chain in my opinon.

Yes I agree, but I also use the Dogmatic as a safety device - my dogs don't pull at all now, but... my main concern is as a safety device. My dogs physically could not pull now as, similar to a horse headcollar, they cannot utilise their strength or weight against it. If something spooked them and they decided to take off - and, lets be honest, the best trained dog in the world will never be totally trustworthy - then I could not hold them with a collar and lead, and certainly not a harness (think 'mush')

I heard of a woman pulled right into a busy main road a few months ago, luckily it happened to be clear, but had it been busy... doesnt bear thinking about!

my GSD was a strong puller since 3 month and used to hurt my shoulder, tried nose strap which worked after 3 days of trying to keep dog still to fit it,
suddenly at 3 years old , she follows me around house like a shadow, walks at my speed outside [ I live in country ] walking along road at night I can see any cars 1/2 mile away so let her off lead to sniff the hedges, there is a certain distance [about 50ft ] as soon as I pass it , she comes up to hedge beside me and starts sniffing again, if car comes she pushes between my legs and sits untill car has passed and she is told to move . now she has become a treasure to train ,7 grandchildren born since I had her ,it makes me laugh outside when a 2 year old says sit and stay ,dog does it but cannot stop wagging her tail, children lay on carpet beside her and sleep after playing , but if she goes into her bed is left alone, what a difference and change was noticeable at 3 year mark ,little disabled so was not personally so active with her as previous dogs
but with 5 daughters she had plenty of exercise...was a rescue pup after last dog died of cancer.

That's brilliant. So pleased the harness works for you and that your dog seems to like it.

I use the word "steady" if ever my dog pulls although, as I say, he rarely does now. In fact I have had complete strangers compliment me on how well he walks by my side
