I'm surprised the registrar was prepared to carry out a meaningless ceremony.

It might have been a commitment ceremony or renewal of vows both of which can be held in register offices

If you wanted the church wedding you could get married abroad without anyone then find a sympathetic vicar/minister who would be able to do the wedding and just jiggle the words so that people would assume it's the real thing.

I know of a couple who wanted to get married in the open air when it was more difficult to do these things. Unbeknown to all but their closest family, they got married in a Registry Office and then the next day had what appeared to be a church wedding in a garden.
  • I tried emailing Woman's Aid for direction on who to speak to or to ask if they knew anything but I didn't get a reply. Their website does say they aren't exactly hot on emails but I felt a bit as though I shouldn't be pestering them and didn't want to phone.

Does anyone know who else I could ask or talk to? I don't really know who I could or should ask. The only email address I have relating to this stuff is someone from the probation service who is meant to keep me in the loop re release/parole applications.

It think you should persevere with Woman's Aid, lovey. You're not pestering them, this is exactly what they're for. Give them a call x.
