Hi,
We have got a quote from a UK VAT registered builder which states the quote for doing a house extension. I am a private individual. I had assumed that quote included VAT but the invoices submitted are adding VAT which has increased the cost of my job beyond my budget. Please advice where do i stand from a legal standpoint
Thanks in advance

Is he adding VAT on to material costs ?
If so he would be re-claiming this vat so not forward charging it on.Be happy...;)0 -
He is charging VAT on the lumpsum cost whicg includes material and labour. The written quotation was attached to the JCT contract and does not state VAT anywhere0

Pay his invoice minus the VAT.

Did the quote include details of his VAT registration?Hi,

Does the invoice include his VAT registration number?
If he is registered for VAT he must account for it.

I would expect all quotes I get from workmen to be net and then VAT added on it.0

Could you explain what you mean please? Its not clear from the text. Thanks.spacey2012 wrote: »Is he adding VAT on to material costs ?

Thats not good advice IMO based on the very limited information OP has given thus far.spacey2012 wrote: »Pay his invoice minus the VAT.

the quote attached to JCT does not mention VAT. The JCT contract exclusively mentions ex VAT in print. when the quote the was provided it did not mention anything except the lumpsum. The JCT has the lumpsum amount but the fine print mentions ex vat0

VAT should be added then if the contract is ex vat0

The quote is NOT stand alone it and the JCT document between them form the contract. Perhaps he should have phrased things better on his pricing page but the reality is, as Ian has already said, that from this post by you then VAT is payable on the lumpsum. Once again, please, do the invoices carry his VAT Reg Number?the quote attached to JCT does not mention VAT.
