    MSE team?! :money:
  • I did Tough Mudder Yorkshire in October, it was amazing! I am a 28 year old new mum, and hadn't trained much at all (before or after having my baby). To be honest, no one thought I would finish it! It took me and the 4 guys on my team 4 hours to complete. The obstacles were mainly loads of fun :) I was absolutely dreading in on the start line and wondered why I'd signed up (spur of the moment thing!), but when I crossed the finish line, I was really chuffed :) The best obstacle was island hopping (think stepping stones on Takeshi's Castle), and I even found the arctic enema (ice bath) not too bad, and I absolutely hate the cold. I'd deffo recommend getting leggings and a long sleeve top that wicks the water away, I was warm again in about 2 minutes :) Seriously though, I am by no means fit and had a thoroughly good day, pre-registered for next year

I have just seen an advert for a local charity 'Mud Pack challenge' for a local hospice, a 5 mile obstacle race with the emphasis on water and mud apparently.
Am thinking of entering....possibly solo although there is a friend who is thinking about it. It's not until October so plenty of time to train. I am adapting my training (have been doing mainly free weights and resistance stuff) to put much more emphasis on endurance and interval training on either the cross trainer or just walking/running outside. So more bodyweight exercises, different types of squats and lunges and strengthening my wrists and forearms.
I have no thoughts of coming anywhere near the top, just want to finish without failing.
Anything else I should be doing? All advice would be really welcome. I am nearly 55, female and quite overweight (although fat is gradually being replaced by muscle!). Normally go to the gym 3 times a week, but will be adding in walking and eventually running up and down the hills where I live. Just out of recovery training from a herniated disc, so need to be careful of anything where weights are over my head and have been told NO deadlifting for a year at least.
thanks to anyone prepared to offer advice.

Just do the Iron Man, at least thats a proper challenge and a decent achievement because its really hard. Stuff like the Tough Mudder is just gimmicky really.

You don't real get it, TM is all about teamwork and getting across the line as a team and is so much more fun than Iron man which seems to be full of people taking it far too seriously.

I did Tough Mudder for the first time in May this year. I am by no means a runner but I completed the 13 miles and 20+ obstacles. I did it with a team who had all done them before and they dragged me round.

I might do it again but would want to train - and would want to avoid the ice box on Tough Mudder so might hope its not somewhere else.

Basically a 15 foot deep tank of ice you jumped into then swam underwater to get out. It was freezing but also it made you all dizzy and odd and I was all over the shop!

If you have never done it do it - recommended it in a team.

Oh and Tough Guy in the January is very hard - my partner found it a challenge and he is a fitness type person runs etc. It is very cold! And you might get caught up on obstacles and that will make you colder - the first people racing were cracking the ice on the river and some people were being dragged out with first stages of hypothermia!
I really fancy doing Tough Mudder but am apprehensive of the electrical cables :(

Hypothermia and electric shock, people do weird things
  • I also want to do a Tough Mudder! Can't do this year for various reasons but there's one near me (Sheffield) Next year and me and some friends are hoping to get a Sheffield Team together in the area. If you're in or near Sheffield and fancy doing one next year feel free to PM me - I'm sure you'd be welcome to come train or hang out with our lot if you're not sure about doing it on your own!
Everyone has a dark side... apparently mine is called Harold?!?

My girls are doing it this year with a team of about 10 ranging from them (totally unfit but trying) to men and women who are fit and strong! They are raising money for the hospital that their sister who suffered a brain injury is in.

I signed up for Tough Mudder as soon as applications were open. I'm volunteering one day and running the other - however, it is now June and I haven't touched anything cardio related for training!

I think I may have to postpone until next year but I will definitely be volunteering still. Be great to see it!
Does the walker choose the path or the path the walker?

    Lift heavy & squat deep.
