Not really sure what's going on with my credit file.

Ok, so this is the story.
I took out a personal loan about 4 years ago but lost my job before I had paid it off in full. It was hard times and the company sold my debt to a collection agency.
As I still couldn't pay the debt, a unsatisfied default was put on my credit file.
However, I finally got another job and paid off the outstanding balance which I thought would change the unsatisfied default to a satisfied one. After 6 months I checked my file and it was still unsatisfied! So I phoned the debt collection company to see what was going on and they said they would change it immediately, to which i argued it needed to be changed to the original date of settlement.
Now after all that I check my file (a month later) and any kind of correspondence with the company just isn't there, there's no record of anything. This leaves me really confused as my current phone bill is still there but any recored of a loan has literally just disappeared.
What should I do? Is the default still there? Or, is it a lucky escape for me? I've no idea what's happened!

You should write to the CRAs in question remember there are more than one. They have to challenge the information on your file and if they don't get a response in 28 days from the company the information should be suppressed.
I did this successfully with call credit0 -
Also complain to the DCA in writing as well as the above.
Hard to deny this if sent signed for.
Can complain to FOS after 8 weeks if they refuse or ignore you.:beer:0
