Working Tax Credits - Maternity Leave

Hi all, This is my first post on here so please bear with me!

I put in a claim for Working Tax credits when I went on Maternity leave as I am now only getting SMP of £550 pcm.

Previously (Last Tax year) I was on £15k + commission.

I have just found out that my claim was unsuccessful as I earn too much money?

Is this calculated on the last tax year?

Many Thanks!

Yes it's strange. You apply using last year, get a nil award then inform them of this year and they adjust.

Also £3900 of your maternity is discounted so ensure you deduct this from your income for this year.

So I have to call them now to get them to change it? What a stupid waste of our money and time!

    Thank you x

Yes, they will adjust it so call them. I'm assuming baby is here? If baby isn't here you won't get much help until they are.

The calculators will tell you how much, just note the time frame on them as for eg turn to us uses annual rate and direct gov gives amounts from now etc. they usually tell you what period they are basing amounts on.

  • Be sure NOT to deduct the 3900 unless you are taking the full 39 weeks SMP.
