Newly Plastered Walls

We recently had our cloakroom walls skimmed, does anyone know how long we need to wait before we need to do the half water half paint thing? And how many times do we do that before painting ?

Yours answers will be appreciated :)

Only once it's called a mist coat, normally when it's completely dry ie all grey normally a couple of days
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You'll see when it starts drying out the colour changes. When it turns a lighter colour all over, well then it's dry and ready to do the mist coat (watered down emulsion)

You only need to do the mist coat once. then wait to dry, then paint with non watered down paint in your top colour

Usually a couple of days for skim plaster to dry in the summer depending on ventilation. 50/50 paint is to thin for most branded paints as a mist coat ,it will splatter every where. 25% is more then enough
  • So do I just pour a bit of paint in the tray and top up with water then mix ? I guess so..

What paint are you going to use? That will determine the paint to water ratio. Shed's own brand cheapo stuff has so much water in it anyway that it doesn't need further dilution. But you can easily dilute a trade emulsion by 50%. So what are you using?

Incidentally I also thin the first coat of the finish paint and its only the final topcoat that goes on neat.

    Cheers

It's a pantry so may take a little longer than normal to dry, if you want to push it leave the door open and a fan running in there, should halve the drying time.

I can tell you the perfect paint to use along the lines above, Crowns magnolia matt emulsion as supplied by B&Q.
Bought 20 ltrs of it a couple of years ago to cover a new addition, still have 19ltrs left, the thinnest most useless paint I have come across.

Can understand that from a B&Q own label, but why someone like crown supplied it with their name on escapes me.

There you are KS, the 1 that did bite;)

Incidentally B&Q have recently changed their paint ranges, they now stock the Valspar range.

Whether that tolls the death bell for Valspar or not, or even if it's already happened, I don't know, they used to make a decent product
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • It's being painted white so probably just dulux silk brilliant white or something, going to buy it tomoro..

No NOT silk. You can't use silk for a mist coat. You need something like Trade Matt Emulsion.
