Replacing Basic Dial Room Thermostat with Digital programmable version
Is this worth doing? Obviously it would make it a lot easier to control the temperature of the house during the winter and would be more accurate that the basic room thermostat presently in the house. Would it be easy to be installed? Does anyone know approximate cost etc?
For info current Boiler approx 16 years old and its a small 3 bed semi.

Yes, well worth it. Decent Honeywell's start at about £60. A simple DIY install. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Three wires. Not even that if the old one is a recent install as they all have a standard back plate (where you fit the wires into) and then plug the thermostat in.Do you want your money back, and a bit more, search for 'money claim online' - They don't like it up 'em Captain Mainwaring0

Usually a straight swap.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

Honeywell controllers are well regarded, though that that you've linked is old. Here's the new version:
wired: http://www.heatandplumb.com/acatalog/Honeywell_CM907_Programmable_7_Day_Digital_Wired_Room_Thermostat.html?utm_source=ProductSearch&utm_medium=GoogleBase&gclid=CJ7EitWC_7gCFXQftAod5m0Atg (swap in place for existing dial thermostat).
wireless: http://www.plumbarena.co.uk/product/honeywell-cmt927-wireless-7-day-programmable-room-thermostat/?gclid=CP2P6veC_7gCFebJtAodqw8Afw#.UgyQDZJwrSg (locate programmer anywhere around house - however it must be a suitable location for monitoring the overall temperature of your house)
You can save a little by going for the other models in the 900 range - they do a simple 24hr program, weekday/weekend program, and this one which allows a different program every day of the week - ideal if you work.0 -
Finally getting round to buying one of these, but have a question, both state Ideal for Combi Boilers. I still have a standard Non Condensing (non Combi) boiler, would these still be suitable or am I better off with an older model with my elderly boiler0

A programmable stat will work with most boilers combi or not. The advantage with a combi is that you don't need a separate timer/programmer to control the heating which you might have with a conventional boiler which controls the hot water times as well.
Salus do a wireless programmable stat for about £35 (have a look at Amazon) which works well and will allow you to put the stat anywhere you want it - the receiver unit can be installed close to the boiler or even in place of the existing room stat if the wiring allows it (see below) and the room stat can then go anywhere you like as it's battery powered.
If you have a conventional timer/programmer (for the hotwater & heating) make sure you install the stat correctly - it's not unknown for the stat to get switched off by the timer and a fixed one might lose it's time & programme unless it's battery powered. A fixed programmable stat will need a permanent live & neutral unless it's battery powered. (a wireless one needs a permanent live & neutral to the receiver).Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers0 -
I currently have one of those horrid cheap dial Thermo stats, would the wiring for the existing one be correct for the new stat and therefore would I be able (or get someone else to) just swap them over?
Assume if using a programmable room stat it would best to have the programmer set to constant for CH and let the stat control the boiler for heating and just leave the timer setting on for the HW on the programmer?0 -
When/if your at home during the day (daylight hours) will set a lower temperature during this time to be more economical.
Then have your normal temperature during the dark evening.0
