Capital One US to Capital One UK

Hi Everyone

I'll be moving to the UK in a month as a full time student. I currently have a credit card with Capital One US with a decent credit limit, and I would like to open up a Capital One UK credit card since I would like to build up credit history in the UK. What should I tell Capital One UK about my Capital One US account and using it as a reference? How would something like that work?

Cheers!

Not sure they would care, to be honest. Probably run as separate companies. Your best chance might be to contact your US provider and ask if they can set up a UK card for you.

PS: Look into American Express, I think they'll set you up a foreign card after six months or something.

From what I know, only AMEX does this - if you're a US/Canada client they'll switch your card to a UK one - provided that you have a job/income here.

Your US credit history doesn't count here at all.

American Express Platinum and Centurion will set up a card in your new country even before you've got there. Other "premier" banking products do offer something similar within the countries they operate (eg HSBC Private and HSBC Premier)

Ultimately you can only call Capital One to see if they operate something similar. On the basis they dont really specialise in the high end market and only operate in the US/Can & UK I suspect they don't but only one way to be certain.

General credit ratings are non-transferable and so unless Capital One offer something similar then as a new person to the UK you are most likely going to be limited to the sub prime market initially (which Capital One is a big player in here)

Try and open up an Amex and in 6 months time they will let you open up one here. Any Amex card is eligible for global transfer.

As far as I am aware, AMEX are the only company that allow a card transfer from one country to another. You could try one of the AMEX Blue cards which was my first card with AMEX when I was still in college. Good luck.

HSBC do transfer for their Premier customers and above.

I am sure other multinational banks do for their upper tier accounts but haven't the inclination to go through and check them all.
