RBS Account Error in my Surname

I'm in the process of opening an online Bank of Scotland high interest current account, just received the application form to sign, and spotted they'd misspelled my surname on all the paperwork.

I just phoned them to try to correct this and was told I had to go to my nearest branch with proof of my real name so they can change it.

I suggested it would be easier to simply cancel this application, as I haven't actually signed anything yet, and I'll then submit a new application. However, the adviser insisted that this was not an option - the application has apparently already gone too far to stop (so what happens if I say I've changed my mind and don't bother signing and returning the application form then?).

What do others think? The nearest branch is in the centre of a town some miles away so I'm reluctant to spend my time and money driving over there just to correct their administrative error. And can they really say the application is unstoppable if I haven't signed anything yet?

Sorry, I meant to say Bank of Scotland, not RBS. I've edited the text of my post but don't seem to be able to change the RBS in the title.

If I were in your position I would submit a new application. I would imagine the existing application will sit on file for a few weeks taking up memory so they are keen for customers to amend existing applications.
As you say, if you had changed your mind about opening the account you would not be obliged to show them proof of who you are so what can they do?

The errored application will have your (errored) name and correct address in the system for a new application.

If you re-apply they'll obviously notice 2 new applications and maybe notice the name error or maybe not and question why you are applying twice for the same account.

This might make a difference between being accepted or not being accepted as they might consider it suspicious.

I would call back and bring it to their attention again. If you're not happy with the response ask to speak to a line supervisor or line manager and ask them to confirm the correct proceedure.

If they say goto the branch then go to the branch.

If you still don't want to goto the branch with ID then don't sign the errored application.

I would however see what the line supervisor and or line manager said and proceed with their advice tbh :)

Surely an online application must mean that it was you who misspelt the surname not the bank???

I went back on to the bank's website and started filling in the online application again to see what Firefox had "remembered" me entering in the Name field.

I did spell my name correctly.

It's very strange - I find it hard to believe that someone at the bank has to manually copy the data from the online application form into their system, but who knows? That's the only way I can think of the error creeping in.

    Kess,

I have applied for teh same account and nothing is mispelled. Yet I have to go and show my proof of idendity and proof of living (passport, Council tax) to the nearest branch.

Save yourself a headache and just go to a branch.

I'll do that. It'll be interesting anyway to see the branch's reaction when they discover my proof of identity etc. doesn't match what's printed on the application form...
