Exact same happened to me, O2 are a joke. I was told when I cancelled that the next direct debit would be the final bill. I had absolutely no contact at all from O2 and they were fully aware I had ported my number elsewhere until I got a letter from a debt collectors for an outstanding O2 balance of £6!! Cue an angry phone call to O2 who were a complete waste of space, they refused to remove the default despite admitting they sent me no bills or letters through the post. They said I should have continued to check online despite then going on to admit they had previously said the final bill was indeed the final bill, then gone on to bill a further £6 to my account. And admitting my online access was closed.

The ombudsman were hopeless and in the end I just gave up. It dropped off a year or so ago. I chalked in up to experience but I will never have any service from O2 again.

Everytime i read about someone else though it just stirs up all this old anger and frustration. It's just plain wrong and I think it should be brought out by some sort of debt charity or consumer group that they've been doing this. Not sure what i expect after that but even that would be satisfying.
  • Thanks for all the replies guys. I wrote a nice letter, explaining the circumstances and oversight of mine for not checking over the phone with them, and sent it first class recorded to the credit referral team at O2. I came home from work today to a letter from them, stating they have had a look at my excellent payment history with them and have removed the default as a 'good will gesture' - VERY SUPRISED!! I was expecting letters back and forth, first letter and it's removed!!

    IT CAN BE DONE!!!! :)

They removed a default as a 'goodwill gesture?' That completely disregards their responsibility to the CRAs to provide accurate and unbiased information.

Either they're cocking up even further, or they've accepted they cocked up originally but don't want to admit it to you.

Considering how much reliance lenders have on credit histories it would disturb me considerably if defaults, missed payments and the like were being removed for 'goodwill!'

'good will gesture' is usually their way of admitting they cocked up without saying it in so many words.

  • Yesterday I logged onto equifax and saw that I have a default for aktiv capital and refers back to 2009. I was horrified as I am in the process of buying a new house and have had an aip agreed. In speaking to aktiv capital they say the account was cleared in full on the 20th feb 2009 and the default (according to equifax) registered on the 15th feb. aktiv kapital have never declared this debt as being settled. I have never received a default notice either. I am waiting on them getting back to me and hope the same thing happen to me and they will remove it seen as they have made the error of not updating the there records.

"goodwill" = we cocked up but can't bring ourselves to admit it publicly, because if we did it could leave us open to a bigger claim for redress
