gloss paint on carpet advice please

I'm hoping someone out there is a Kim or an Aggie....we've been decorating and discovered that some gloss paint has dried on the downward part of the stairs carpet (not the step itself the bit joining it to the step above).
It's not thickly dried on so you could pick it off, but it's definately a mark - any suggestions as to what I might try to get rid. Someone has suggested watered down gin - I could always drink it if it doesnt work. But I'm scared of trying anything too chemical on it.
Advice would be much aprreciated.

Let it dry completely and then pick it off. You may have to gently cut some fibres to release it. Don't attempt to wash it off with whatever solvent works with whatever paint you've used. All you'll do is a) spread it around and b) drive it further down into the pile.
